Puppet Museum (Museu da Marioneta)

The Museum was created in 1987, by the S. Lourenço Puppet Company, whose work continued the Portuguese tradition of puppet theatre and opera.

The Museum houses over one thousand items - marionettes of every technique and form, together with masks from the four corners of the world, representing various cultures.

It aims to collect, maintain, conserve, investigate, exhibit and divulge the art of the puppet theatre, fostering apprenticeship, knowledge and interest in the world of Puppetry.

The museum has a performance room, temporary exhibition areas and a Children’s Area - a creative and learning space.

The educational service organises guided tours, in which the different forms and types of marionettes are explained, together with their manipulation, history and construction.
