Processions are worship manifestations in every countries and religions, being an external and public manifestation of faith.

There are several processions throughout the year in different areas of the country, being some associated to pagan festivals.

In Lisboa, we highlight those that, by their tradition, are the most important in the city's life and involve the participation of the population, not only local, but also visitors / tourists.

Corpus Christi

The Solemnity of the most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, usually known as Corpus Christi, was institued by Pope Urban IV in 1264 and it takes place sixty days after Easter. It is originally celebrated on a thursday emphasizing the institution of the Eucharist, wich was observed om Holy Thursday, at the Last Supper of Jesus with the Apostles, a memorial of his infinite Love towards Humanity. In Portugal it is now celebrates on a Sunday in June.

In Lisboa the feast of Corpus Christi is enhanced by the Procession through some of the downtown streets, during wich the Blassed Sacrament is carried and held aloft in the middle of thousands of believers, in a demonstration of faith. From the 15th century onwards it assumes a wider significance and in the 17th century it becames the oldest and most attended of all the porcessions.
