The Escola Nova Programme aims to modernize the set of schools managed by the municipality, promoting improved conditions of habitability and ensuring that existing spaces are suited to new demanding standards, in terms of hygiene, comfort and safety, thus aiming to equip schools with installations that will guarantee a good school experience, in accordance with modern educational requirements and that are more favourable to ensuring full development of the educational process.

This action programme for renewal of the state school facilities has established priorities and criteria for intervention within the network’s facilities, wherein it is estimated that the most degraded buildings will be rehabilitated by 2013. The programme currently involves 120 interventions in 80 schools, wherein the following 49 interventions have been undertaken in 39 schools.
