General information for foreign nationals working in Portugal

Which foreign nationals need a visa to work in Portugal?
Different rules apply depending on country of origin.

Citizens of the following countries do not require a residence visa or permit 


Citizens of these countries who intend to stay in Portugal for longer than three months must  register with the Lisbon Municipality.

Citizens of all countries not listed above require a residence visa or permit.

What kind of visa do I need?
The kind of residence visa or permit you need depends on the desired length of your stay in Portugal.

Desired length of stay Options
Less than one year Short-term visa
One year or more Residence visa, followed by a residence permit
