It was built and named after the great Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama, who discovered the sea route to India in 1498. This garden was created in the 18th century, in the vicinity of one of the Belém district's oldest quarters, Rua Vieira Portuense, named after the painter of the same name. With approximately 5 hectares, has extensive lawns and in the centre is a monument to Vasco da Gama.
