Exhibition Areas

The Portuguese Pharmacy

Areas and environments have been created that enable visitors to experience, in an approachable way, the history and technical development of the Portuguese pharmacy from the end of the 15th century to modern times. There are reconstructions of real Portuguese pharmacies from the apothecary’s shop of the 13th century to the Farmácia Liberal of the early 20th century. Of particular interest are the reconstruction of a genuine traditional Chinese pharmacy from late 19th century Macao and an area devoted to the Military Pharmacy.

The Pharmacy around the World

The theme of the Pharmacy and Health is developed with high quality artefacts from civilisations and cultures distant in both time and space, such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Incas, the Aztecs, Islam, Tibet, China, Japan and, lastly, the European Pharmacy from the Middle Ages to 1929 at the time of the isolation of penicillin by the British scientist Sir Alexander Fleming. The exhibition ends with a display of the portable pharmacies used on the Space Shuttle “Endeavour” on the last voyage of the millennium (December 2000) and medications used on the Mir Space Station and Russian astronauts’ rations.
